Helping nurseries deliver their own structured active physical play programmes whilst developing in-house staff expertise.
Develop Your Own Active Play Programme
Little Gymmies is not designed to replace nursery staff with an external provider. Instead, it gives settings the opportunity to develop and deliver their own structured active physical play programme using the team they already have.
Through lesson plans, activity ideas, training and ongoing support, staff can develop new skills and confidence in delivering active physical play. Their existing relationships with the children, combined with a deeper understanding of individual needs and abilities, help create engaging experiences that support participation, confidence and physical development.
The result is a sustainable, safeguarding-friendly approach that builds valuable in-house expertise whilst reducing reliance on external providers.
Why Active Physical Play Matters in Early Years
Many children now spend a significant proportion of their day within nursery settings. At the same time, busy family lives can make it difficult for some children to access structured active physical play opportunities outside of nursery.
This creates a unique opportunity for early years settings to provide regular movement experiences that support confidence, balance, coordination and physical literacy from the baby room through to preschool.
Unlike many areas of learning, active physical play can be adapted to the needs and abilities of every child, creating opportunities for success, participation and achievement regardless of individual strengths or challenges.
Regular movement opportunities may also contribute to improved attention, body awareness, self-regulation and engagement throughout the nursery day, whilst helping children develop healthy habits and reducing sedentary time, even during periods of poor weather.
For some settings, Little Gymmies may also complement wider SEND provision, providing opportunities for movement, sensory exploration and participation that could support the objectives of individual children accessing SEND funding.
Active Play & Physical Literacy
Physical literacy begins long before organised sport.
Climbing, balancing, swinging, crawling and exploring help children develop the fundamental movement skills that underpin future physical activity.
Little Gymmies encourages children to move, experiment and build confidence through enjoyable active play experiences.
Inclusive Play & SEND
The adaptable nature of Little Gymmies means activities can be modified to support children with a wide range of abilities, interests and developmental stages.
The familiar and repeatable environment may help some children feel more confident engaging with movement activities whilst allowing practitioners to adapt challenges to individual needs.
Structured & Free Play
Little Gymmies can support both child-led exploration and more structured physical development activities.
Drawing on over 16 years of experience delivering active physical play programmes through Tumble Tots, structured activity ideas and staff development opportunities can help settings maximise the benefits of the system.
Indoor & Outdoor Use
Whether supporting outdoor provision, creating opportunities within nursery gardens or providing active play experiences indoors during poor weather, Little Gymmies can be used throughout the year.
The modular design allows settings to adapt activities to suit available space and the needs of individual groups.
Supporting Physical Development
Little Gymmies provides opportunities for children to develop balance, coordination, climbing confidence, upper body strength and physical literacy through active movement and exploration.
Designed for indoor and outdoor use, the modular system creates opportunities for children to challenge themselves at their own pace whilst building confidence through achievement.
